MRC Epidemiology Unit joins in the 2009 Cambridge Science Festival

14th March 2009

At the 2009 Cambridge Science Festival the MRC Epidemiology Unit was involved in several events engaging the general public with our research. The week began with a visit to a local primary school where Cathy Elks introduced the concept of genetics and how it is used in epidemiology studies in a session entitled "From Codes to Creatures". Children took part in a superheroes card game to demonstrate natural selection as well as in demonstrations of how the Unit studies genetics in large populations.

At the Science on Saturday event the MRC Epidemiology Unit encouraged the public to increase their physical activity and see if they had the "Xercise Factor". This was part of the Biology Zone section of the Science on Saturday event which contained many stands from the Medical Research Council (MRC). The "Xercise Factor" stand encouraged over 300 children and adults to increase their heart rate through a variety of physical activities including trampolining, cycling and spacehoppering!! Staff from the Unit demonstrated how a little amount of fun activity was enough to get the pulse racing and improve fitness and health.

We also hosted a group of Finnish students aged between 16–18 years old. They were given a series of talks about the research carried out in the Institute of Metabolic Science. They were also shown around the MRC Epidemiology Unit testing area and the University of Cambridge Metabolic Research Laboratories.
