Biography
Ruth Loos is Group Leader of the Genetic Aetiology of Obesity Programme in the MRC Epidemiology Unit based in the Institute of Metabolic Science in Cambridge, England.
Ruth’s primary research interests focus on the identification of genes contributing to the risk of obesity-related traits and on how lifestyle modifies these genetic effects. Her group participates in the GIANT (Genomic Investigation of Anthropometric Traits) consortium, with whom she identified a series of genetic variants unequivocally associated with obesity.
Ruth obtained her PhD at the University of Leuven, Belgium. She was then a postdoctoral fellow at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge. There her research mainly concerned the identification of genetic variants for energy expenditure and fat oxidation through linkage and association studies. She joined the MRC Epidemiology Unit in July 2005.
