Anticipated Regret Trial

Being given the "all clear" after being screened for a disease can sometimes lead to complacency and a false sense of reassurance. Individuals may therefore be less likely to follow healthy lifestyles and increase their risk of developing a disease.

A number of studies have suggested that prompting individuals to anticipate how they would feel later in life if they were to develop a disease that they could have prevented can actually lead to improvements in physical activity and behaviour. We are collaborating with research groups in London and Leicester to test this in individuals after screening for type 2 diabetes. Volunteers in the ADDITION (Leicester) study are tested for type 2 diabetes and those that are diagnosed as not having type 2 diabetes enter this study and discuss how they might feel if they later developed the disease.
