Cambridge Birth Cohort 2001–2008
Over 1,300 infants from the Cambridge area have been recruited into this study. They have had basic measurements taken as well as blood samples and their parents have completed simple questionnaires asking about diet and other aspects of their child's life. The aim of this study is to identify the genetic, nutritional and hormonal factors involved in early childhood growth. We are also looking at the association of these factors with glucose metabolism in the child's mother.
Information from this group of infants has uncovered several interesting findings:
- insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) levels have a role in regulating infant growth and body composition.
- maternal glucose metabolism influences markers of foetal growth and birth outcomes.
