European Youth Heart Study (EYHS)

The European Youth Heart Study (EYHS) is a study investigating the personal, environmental, and lifestyle factors that may influence cardiovascular disease risk factors in children aged 9 and 15 years of age. Four countries, Denmark, Norway, Estonia and Portugal, were originally involved in the study but it has been extended and now includes Iceland and Spain. More countries are also planning to join the study.

The MRC Epidemiology Unit is a partner of the European Youth Heart Study. The Unit contributed to the planning and organisation of the study. It has also led on analyses examining associations between physical activity, sedentary behaviour and fitness with obesity and metabolic outcomes. The Unit is leading on the genetic analyses within the European Youth Heart Study. It has been involved in analysing data from Denmark looking at the impact of social and cultural factors on physical activity in this group of children.
