Statistics

Statistics Team

Statistics is the science of collecting, summarising, presenting and interpreting data. We use data from epidemiological studies to answer specific questions, for example the association between a risk factor and a disease.

The MRC Epidemiology Unit contains a specialist statistics team. Members of this team provide statistical advice and consultancy to scientists and research staff at all stages of a study. This starts at the initial design phase and continues through to the data analysis and publication of the results. The team also works closely with the Information Technology, Data Management and Study Coordination teams.

Members of the statistics team undertake statistical analysis for a range of projects within the Unit, including EPIC-Norfolk, ADDITION, SPEEDY and studies within the MAGIC and GIANT research consortia. They also coordinate and advise on the statistical analysis work of all EPIC Europe partners within the InterAct project. They collaborate with colleagues from the MRC Biostatistics Unit on topics of methodological interest. By keeping in touch with new developments in statistical methods and software, the team aim to ensure that the most appropriate and up to date methods are used in all the studies run by the Unit.

Members of the statistics team teach on a variety of courses, including the University of Cambridge MPhil in Epidemiology and Public Health and a short course on “Epidemiology for Clinicians”. They also organise internal training sessions for the Unit on aspects of statistics and statistical software.

As well as the statistics team, the Unit includes a specialist in statistical genetics.
