PhD Testimonials

"I discovered the research group that would later become the MRC Epidemiology Unit in 2003 while visiting the website of the Department of Public Health and Primary care of the University of Cambridge. I was immediately impressed by the variety and high quality of publications coming from the members of the small group that would subsequently become a much larger and ever-growing Unit. I was then a physician in Cameroon reflecting on becoming a chronic disease epidemiologist. The award of a Shell Centenary Chevening Scholarship in 2005 brought me to the University of Cambridge to study for an MPhil in Epidemiology. During the course of the MPhil, I had contacts with the MRC Epidemiology Unit’s Director and his deputy, and later joined the Unit to pursue a PhD project on screening for type 2 diabetes as a Gates Scholar.

The Unit boasts a conducive atmosphere of collaborative academic interactions with extremely motivated and competent researchers from different backgrounds and from all over the world. There are also regular seminars featuring world class leading experts talking about the latest developments in diabetes, obesity and related fields. The Unit’s research portfolio spans across the epidemiological, public health and statistical aspects of these metabolic disorders. It is a unique milieu of research and learning where a budding epidemiologist is equipped with a strong foundation that will make it easy to embark upon a research career. Having compared my experience with that of students from other institutions, I am proud and delighted to say this."
