On Saturday 7 June 2014 a team of eager volunteers from the MRC Epidemiology Unit traveled to the Rowley Mile Racecourse in Newmarket to take part in the first East of England Well-Being show. We joined a wide range of community organizations, sports clubs and health charities from around the region, all determined not to let a weather forecast for widespread thunderstorms spoil the fun.
In the morning our director, Professor Nick Wareham, delivered an talk on “Walking away from diabetes”, and over the course of the day our team talked to members of the public about the Unit’s research and the importance of a healthy lifestyle. We also took this opportunity to let people know about several of our studies that are currently recruiting.
That said, the most popular feature of our stand was definitely a trampoline, on which children (and a few adults – you know who you are!) were able to test the effect of physical activity on their heart rate.
Many thanks to Enable East for organizing the show, and to our staff who gave up part of their weekend to join in, we’re looking forward to the 2nd show next year.
