Tom is a PhD student in the Physical Activity Epidemiology programme, supervised by Dr Soren Brage. His research is primarily methodological and focuses on the interpretation of free-living waveform acceleration data. His current projects include using deep learning to infer activity energy expenditure from wrist acceleration signals, and exploring how the resulting models can be repurposed for activity recognition.
Tom holds an undergraduate degree in Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science, and a master’s degree in Advanced Computer Science, both from the University of Birmingham. Prior to beginning his research as a PhD student, he worked as a Data Scientist in the Unit.
