The goal of the Unit has both an aetiological and a preventive imperative which determines the structure of the Unit’s programmes and the institutional framework in which it is based.
The Unit is physically located in the Institute of Metabolic Science (IMS) and this provides a disease-specific focus and strong linkage to basic science. Being embedded in the IMS is critical to our aspiration not only to discover new associations between exposures and disease but also to determine the likelihood of causation and the mechanisms involved.
The Unit is also a constituent part of the Cambridge Institute of Public Health (IPH) which provides a route to multidisciplinary collaborations that aid translation of research into public health action. In the same way that the IMS provides connectivity to the clinical care of people with diabetes, so the IPH provides connections to primary care and public health.
