The aim of this suite of studies was to validate combined heart rate and movement algorithms for measuring physical activity related energy expenditure and total energy expenditure during different activities in the laboratory and against doubly-labeled water during free-living conditions. Studies were conducted in children and adult populations. Prediction of energy expenditure from a selection of other currently available devices (single-axis accelerometers) was compared with the estimates from the combined heart rate and movement monitoring method.
