Clinical Career Development Fellow
Luca A. Lotta is a Clinical Career Development Fellow in the Aetiology of Diabetes and Related Metabolic Disorders programme, an Honorary Clinical Fellow at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and a Junior Research Fellow with Wolfson College.
Luca graduated in Medicine summa cum laude from the University of Milan (Milan, Italy), where he also obtained a Ph.D. in Methodology of Clinical Research with work on the genetics of common thrombotic disorders. In the frame of his Ph. D. coursework, he spent time as a Visiting Scientist at the Human Genome Sequencing Center, Baylor College of Medicine (Houston, USA), leading a research project on the application of targeted second-generation DNA-sequencing in early-onset cardiovascular and haemorrhagic diseases. He later obtained a second Ph.D. from the University of Leiden (Leiden, the Netherlands) with a thesis on the pathophysiology of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura. In 2013, he moved to the MRC – Epidemiology Unit in order to take on the discovery of biomarkers and causal mechanisms for the metabolic consequences of obesity in the frame of the EU-funded EMIF-Metabolic project, for which he serves in the Executive Committee.
Luca is author of several peer-reviewed scientific publications and a recipient of national and international awards, including the Bayer Hemophilia Award and the Raffaello De Biasi Award from the Italian Association of Haemophilia Centres.
