Senior Data Scientist
Current work and interests
Tom is a Senior Data Scientist in the Aetiology of Diabetes and Related Metabolic Disorders programme, and is responsible for the technical delivery of the InterConnect project.
The InterConnect project aims to facilitate and coordinate research on the interaction between genetic and environmental factors in the aetiology of diabetes and obesity across different populations by creating a global diabetes research network. The core of the network will be a novel technology platform for the harmonisation and analysis of data across studies in a manner that avoids the complex ethical and legal issues associated with the physical sharing of data. This will facilitate collaborative research across different studies and study populations to enable new research questions that could not otherwise be addressed
Background and experience
Tom has a Master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Cambridge University. Previously he has worked at Caterpillar and Thomson Reuters in the UK and USA, and at Tesco.
At Thomson Reuters he designed systems that underpinned a new real time data delivery network which provided large volumes of financial data. More recently at Tesco Tom has worked on tools to automate sales forecasting, improve product allocation in stores and analyse customer behaviour across online and in store shopping.
