William H. Herman, M.D., M.P.H. is the Stefan S. Fajans/GlaxoSmithKline Professor of Diabetes, Professor of Internal Medicine and Epidemiology, and Director of the Michigan Center for Diabetes Translational Research. He is an internationally recognized clinician and researcher in diabetes. His clinical interests focus on the management of diabetes, its complications, and comorbidities. His research focuses on the broad areas of clinical trials, epidemiology, health services research, and clinical economics. Dr. Herman has served as a principal investigator for the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT), the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), and Glycemia Reduction Approaches for Diabetes: A Comparative Effectiveness (GRADE) Study. Dr. Herman’s research has also focused on screening for diabetes and diabetic complications, and diabetes epidemiology. He has explored the impact of health system organization and structure on the processes and outcomes of diabetes care and directs the DCCT, DPP, and GRADE Study Economic Workgroups. He chairs the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) Workgroup on Diabetes Quality Measures and serves on the American Diabetes Association Professional Practice Committee.
