The transition to retirement can present a critical period for promoting healthier lifestyle behaviours such as regular physical activity. The underlying dynamics that might influence how couples shape, negotiate and actively engage in physical activity at and around the transition to retirement have not previously been researched.
The aims of this small qualitative study were: (1) to obtain an in-depth understanding of cohabitating partners’ influences and interactions in negotiating physical activity at and around the transition to retirement, (2) to explore and describe how couples perceive physical activity at and around the transition to retirement, and (3) to explore and describe how couples experience physical activity across their lives as part of a couple.
